For Serve the City at Work, – corporate volunteering, we’re looking for lively trash tour guides (yes, we’ll pay you!) to lead trash-picking adventures through Amsterdam’s beautiful parks (Vondelpark, Oosterpark, Nelson Mandela park). And because we believe in sharing the fun, we caught up with Ani Deal, one of our legendary coordinators who just moved to Brussels, to give you a sneak peek into what it’s all about.
Tell us a bit about yourself!
I’m Ani Deal. I recently moved from Amsterdam to Brussels, but while I was in Amsterdam, I worked as a tour guide, which I absolutely loved! But honestly, what I loved even more was leading the trash tours for Serve the City. Nothing like mixing history with litter-picking!
How did you first get involved with Serve the City?
Funny story. My dad actually started Serve the City in Brussels, so you could say I’ve been part of the team since the beginning! Watching it grow was inspiring, and when I moved to Amsterdam, I jumped at the chance to stay involved.
So, trash tours- what’s the deal?
They’re way more fun than they sound! Picture this: a group of 20 people, all armed with trash grabbers, rings, and bags, walking through the park, learning cool historical facts, and picking up litter as we go. I share fascinating news about the city, and people get competitive about collecting the most trash—what’s not to love?
What’s it like running these tours?
Honestly, it’s a blast! There’s something amazing about giving back to the city while sharing its incredible history. Plus, the teams get super into it. They love trying to out-trash each other. It’s like a competition mixed with community service—talk about a win-win!
Who’s the ideal trash tour guide?
You’ve got to love chatting with people, be comfortable leading a group, and be flexible. The scheduling happens in advance, but if you’re a freelance tour guide with a bit of extra time, this is the perfect addition to your weekly routine. Plus, it’s way more fun than it sounds—trust me!
